Net metering and help with the electric bill

We all need help with the electric bill. Net metering is one of the mechanisms to achieve that. Net metering is an arrangement that is available to owners of solar energy systems.

How net metering can help with the electric bill?

As the day progresses, your solar energy system consistently produces energy. The energy it produces is either more or less than you need. If you produce more than you need, you will send the excess electricity to the power company grid. If you produce less than you need, you get the electricity from the power company grid. Net metering compensates you for the excess electricity your solar energy system has generated.

How the meter keeps track?

You have an electric meter that keeps track of not only the amount of energy you utilize throughout the day but also the amount of extra solar energy you send over to the grid. Now at certain points of the day, when your solar energy system produces more energy than you need, the extra energy goes through the electric meter into the power company grid. This, in turn, makes the electric meter run backward. Basically, giving you “credit.” Other times of the day, when your solar energy system is not producing enough solar energy to meet the needs, you must rely on the previous credits. When your electric meter runs backward you become a surplus energy producer. At night when your solar energy system is not producing any solar energy, you use your own surplus energy and in return help with the electric bill. You get the bill for the “net” energy use. The “net” energy use is calculated by the total energy you draw from the energy company and that total is subtracted from the excess energy you send over to the power company grid. You get a bill for the difference between the two.
