The required solar panel roof space is a must ask for everyone that is interested in a solar energy system installation. The two main factors that affect solar panel roof space are the amount of unshaded roof area and efficiency of your panels.

Inspect the unused roof space and determine how much is considered shade free. It is vital that the rooftop is shade free. When shadows fall upon the solar panels, the performance of the entire solar energy system degrades. The solar panel efficiency is also an important aspect in terms of rooftop space requirements. The efficiency of your solar panels is calculated with respect to the area occupied by the panels. The simplest way to understand this relationship is to remember that less rooftop space is required for solar panels that have greater efficiency ratings and vice versa. Follow the 3-step process to figure out how much rooftop space you will need:

  1. Vist SOLARINSTALLGURU.COM and find out how big of a solar energy system you will need based on your last one-year energy usage records. For the sake of calculations, let us assume that you will need a 5kW or 5000 watts system.
  2. How many panels will you need for them to be able to generate 5000 watts of energy? Again, for the sake of calculation let us assume that each of the panels is 190 watts. If you divide the energy needs by the watts produced by each of the panels you get: 5000 / 190 = 26. So, you need 26 panels for your power generation needs.
  3. How much space would 26 panels occupy on your rooftop? Each panel occupies about 15 square feet of space. Therefore, if you multiply 26 and 15, you get 395. You will need about 395 square feet of rooftop space to be able to generate 5000 watts of renewable energy.
